No other site in Myanmar has as many species of mangrove as this Ayeyarwady delta sanctuary in Bogalay township, Ayeyarwady Division. The mangrove species include Kambala, Kanazo, Madama and Thayaw. Though the area was hard-hit by Cyclone Nargis in May 2008, the Ayeyarwady dolphin, as well as crocodiles, turtles, tortoises and otters still can be seen in this 52.79 square-mile ( 136 sq km) wildlife sanctuary. The mangrove ecosystem may be studied with the permission of the Ministry of Forestry.
